EARLY AMERICAN ALBUMEN OF A HOUSE

On mount, below lower left corner of photo: "E.C. SWAIN, Photo." On mount, below lower right corner of photo: "Malden Centre, Mass."

According to A Directory of Massachusetts Photographers 1839-1900, by Chris Steele & Ron Polito, Edwin C. Swain was in business from 1867-1887, at various addresses in Malden. This is the best regional directory of 19th century photographers that Iíve ever seen, and is highly recommended. Since they relied on directories and advertisements for their information, it is very possible that E.C. Swain operated before 1867 as well. We are confident that this photograph is from the 1860s, or the early 1870s at the very latest.

The open space is remarkable in a landscape that quickly became dense and highly developed. The people posed are relaxed; not the formal portrait one often sees accompanying a homestead.
