CALIFORNIA GOLD MINING BROTHERS
FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM
WITH A PICK AND A NUGGET OF GOLD
This is an image that tells a story, even without the accompanying text. A well-dressed man with the appearance of an investor or banker holds a meerschaum pipe while looking at a gold nugget from the other man. This second man appears decidedly more rustic, even as he wore his finest to the studio. The palm of one hand rests on a large pick, which is balanced against the floor.
ACCOMPANYING TEXT. “To Whom It May Concern: I hereby certify that the attached ambrotype shows 2 brothers named Keast from Penzance, Cornwall, England. They went to the gold diggings in California in the 1850’s and returned to England around 1860. This was amoung a number of items, including named medals, to various members of this family that I bought in 1985. Alan Beadle.”
