There are many good biographies of Ball online. There is also a book on the photographer, by Deborah Willis, titled J.P. Ball: Daguerrean and Studio Photographer. Additionally, Cincinnati Museum Center has examples of Ball's work in their History Library and Archives, as well as information on his partnership with Thomas.

Photo: Soiling, much of which is more apparent when tilted. Spots and specks. 2 light creases at upper right corner. Scuff marks in lower right portion. Mount: Top corners clipped. Wear at bottom corners. Soiling, front and back.
APPEARANCE
Sharp. Very good tones. Great lighting and contrast.
