CHARLIE & HATTIE
BY AFRICAN AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER JAMES P. BALL

Very unusual item with attribution not on the brass mat, or the velvet pad, but in period ink inside the case: "Charlie & Hattie. Ball’s Daguerreian Gallery 4th St. Cin Feb. 25th 1854."

This high-contrast style is typical of Ball’s work. There are many good biographies of Ball online. There is also a book on the photographer, by Deborah Willis, titled J.P. Ball: Daguerrean and Studio Photographer. Additionally, Cincinnati Museum Center has examples of Ball's work in their History Library and Archives.

Check out the man’s exaggerated hairstyle. Also, the gold tinting on the woman’s delicate chain and clasp.
