HOUSING
The case may be dated a little later than the daguerreotype. The snug fit indicates that the image has probably been in there for a long time. It was a common practice for family members to change the original housing of their images. The case has a retaped spine.

APPEARANCE
Good contrast. Very good focus in central area as we can see the veins of his hand. Great early composition. The blue books (actually, turquoise) are a wonderful feature. Great example of an 1840s daguerreotype.

CONDITION
Someone resealed this daguerreotype with the original extra-thick glass. The white spots lower right are all in the glass and not on the plate. The black spot over the shoulder on the left is on the glass. The spot by the ear on the right is debris inside the glass. Heavy almost crude horizontal buff marks, which are often typical of early daguerreotypes.
