PHILLIP DOUGHERTY IN SPORTSMEN'S DRESS, HOLDS RIFLE WITH HUNTING DOG BESIDE HIM

A hand-colored quarter plate daguerreotype of Phillip Dougherty recently sold at world-renowned Heritage Auctions for over $16,000.

This is obviously a companion piece and the text, affixed to the velvet, on our half plate, confirms that: "PHIL IN HIS SPORTSMEN,S DRESS – In two very find (sic) Daguerreotypes from Whitehurst’s establishment, which lie before us, we have our friend, PHILLIP DOUGHERTY, in his complete hunting armour, with his noble pointer, given him by Dr. RIVES, crouched down at his side, obedient to his command. The pictures are very good, and we never saw Phil to better advantage. His lasses will admire these portraits of him very much, and we... not sure they will get him a wife... though he bears his age very well, and ... fond of those sports of the field and ... which try the metal of young men, ... he were married." A portion of the note is missing, leaving us to guess at a few words.

JESSE WHITEHURST. Jesse Harrison Whitehurst is regarded as one of the elite and important daguerreotypists. He established galleries in many cities including "Richmond, Petersburg and Lynchburg Va.; Louisville, Kentucky; Baltimore, Maryland; Washington D.C.; New York City, New York; Weldon and Wilmington, North Carolina… and Tarborough, North Carolina." (source: Craig’s Daguerreian Registry, by John Craig. The registry has almost 2 full pages on Whitehurst.)

COLLECTIONS. Jesse Whitehurst is represented in the collections of The Getty Museum, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Canada, among others.

PHILLIP DOUGHERTY IN SPORTSMEN'S DRESS
SIZE
Half plate.
HOUSING
Full case with retaped spine.
CONDITION
Scratches and wipes, most noticeable on the dog, but also upper right. Some spots. Light mold spiders. Resealed. As mentioned above, a portion of the note, affixed to the velvet, is missing, leaving us to guess at a few words.
APPEARANCE
The powder horn has been highlighted through the use of deliberate scratching, as often seen in women’s brooches. So, those are not damage to the plate. Average contrast. Lots of great details. Strong content. Strong composition.
