EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

No, early childhood education did not start as a late 20th century phenomenon. Here are two scenes from one early education center, from more than a century ago. You can locate the piano in each, for perspective.

They’re fascinating. In the first, we see half of the classroom constructing wood block structures. Notice that they’re all quite different from each other. There are three girls at a table, intently reading. There are girls playing with dolls, a child with a ball, and other children playing with vehicles.

In the second photograph, all children have removed their socks. It appears that one boy is being weighed, while a girl is getting measured. Even the attire is intriguing.
