INSTITUTE SILVER PRINT PHOTO BY FRANCES BENJAMIN JOHNSTON
Antique silver print photograph
of the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Tuskegee Institute, April 1906,
by female photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston.
The photograph features Andrew
Carnegie and Charles Eliot, with others, on a reviewing stand with a procession
of African American women below.
Frances B. Johnston (1864 - 1952)
was one of the earliest American female photographers. A quick internet
search will give you much information on her.
Collections of her photographs
have been purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum
of Art, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
In addition, the Library of
Congress holds a collection of her work.
We were able to find a variation
of this photograph in the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection on the Library
of Congress website.
The photo is mounted on a thin
paper mount. This fits into another larger mount, with makeshift photo
corners, and has an attached mat.
At the bottom of the thin paper
mount is some handwritten identification of some of the people in the photo.
The names that we can read:
L. Abbott, Pres. Eliot, V.E. Macy. Wilcox. Frissell. Agnes. E.E.O. Twombley,
