WELL-DRESSED COUPLE BY GERMON, PHILADELPHIA

The mat is stamped "GERMON 702 CHEST. ST. PHILA." This is Washington L. Germon, recognized as one of Philadelphia's premier daguerreotypists. The excellent resource Directory of Pennsylvania Photographers 1839-1900, by Linda A. Reis and Jay W. Ruby, does not include this address. The addresses the book lists for Germon on Chestnut Street include 182, 68 1/2, 168 & 700-02. The mat is definitely marked "702," but perhaps it corresponds to "700-02."

A finely dressed couple 'snuggles' for the photographer. One wonders if this could be a wedding portrait since the woman has a veil behind her head.
