1840s QUARTER PLATES OF
MERCY WILLIAMS SEARS & MILTON SEARS,
WITH FLOWERS

A little research shows that this couple was married January 13, 1848 and Mercy, who died in 1912, lived her whole life in Ashfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts. (source: Find a Grave website)

There's a lot to like about this pair: 1840s, original and matching cases with original spines, identified, and although his portrait is very strong, hers is exquisite with the tinted flowers and gold highlights. The book titles in hers are laterally reversed and readable, but would require a little study.

Notes pinned to each respective case in old ink: “Mercy Williams Sears” (it appears to say “Mercey,” but her gravestone says “Mercy”) and “Milton Sears.”

DAGUERREOTYPES
$600.

MERCY WILLIAMS SEARS & MILTON SEARS
SIZE
Each is quarter plate.
HOUSING
Each in an original 1840s style case, with matching velvet pads and original spines.
CONDITION
MERCY: Some droplets in the glass. We have not removed this daguerreotype from the case. Tarnish at perimeter. Horizontal buff marks. MILTON: Heavy horizontal buff marks. Droplets in the glass. Grey area of tarnish suggests it was cleaned. Mat abrasions. Remnants of seals.
APPEARANCE
MERCY: Dynamic. Her face is so sincere, with lovely tinting. Her portrait fills the large quarter plate format. The gold highlights are striking, as are the tinted flowers. Sophisticated, yet delightfully primitive, reflecting the first decade of photography. MILTON: He’s a handsome young man! Great use of space. Wonderful tones to his face and hands.
