WOMAN POSING BY MURAL OF SAILING SHIP, CIVIL WAR ERA

The featured image is supplemented with a silvery male portrait. It seems to me this pairing represents a couple. She’s dazzling, holding a book, on a table with red tablecloth. Below, a painted classical pillar, has a mural of a sailing ship on it. Is the ship just decoration or is there some significance? Could her husband be a sea captain? The tax stamp on reverse would indicate that this tintype dates to the Civil War era.

The male portrait is very strong in presence. The man looks like a matinee idol.

2 TINTYPES IN A DOUBLE THERMOPLASTIC CASE
SIZE
Sixth plate.
HOUSING
Crisp, handsome, black thermoplastic case with geometric design. Corners and edges all good with no nicks. Clasp does not work.
CONDITION
Each tintype is without bends. Very good condition to excellent condition for each, indicating that they’ve scarcely been outside the case. We applied new cover glass to each.
APPEARANCE
She is enhanced by color and other interesting facets to the composition. Very good contrast. Strong tonal range. He is more of a high contrast image, with the darks very dark and the whites very white.
