HADLEY, MASSACHUSETTS, 1860s, PERIOD INK

The captions read, in period ink: "Square – So. Hadley,"
"Cong. Ch. – So. Hadley," and "Main St. So. Hadley."

Notice the overhead branches (left top) on "Square – So. Hadley."
The tones are extra rich and the composition is majestic with lots of sky in "Cong. Ch. – So. Hadley." And "Main St. So. Hadley" makes us want to follow.

On reverse of each, the maker is listed as "A. E. Alden’s Photograph, Porcelain and Ferrotype Gallery" with the address as "Cor. Main and Worthington Streets, Near North Church, Springfield, Mass."

A Directory of Massachusetts Photographers 1839-1900, by Chris Steele and Ron Polito, lists Augustus E. Alden at the address of Main, Corner Washington in 1868. After that, Alden moved elsewhere. (Information from a dated CDV.) There is no earlier listing for Alden, but these 3 CDVs could easily have been earlier, although 1868 is a good estimate by the card stock.
