This image portrays a role reversal. The poor white man has tired oxen and a broken down wagon. Meanwhile, finely dressed African American men, two in occupational aprons (perhaps a barber and a butcher) look on. There are a couple of white youths and a black youth mingling with the men.

We see clothing and hats in the store windows behind. We can see part of the sign at upper right: "PIONEER..."

Boudoir cards are an approximate size and generally date to the 1890s.

Caption at lower right of photo: "1009 Taking a Rest." At left side of mount: "VIEWS OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA." At right side of mount: "PUBLISHED BY INDSEY & BROWN, ASHEVILLE, N. C." At bottom of mount: "CHARACTER SERIES." There is a lot of text on Asheville on the back of the mount. Please see the scans.

SIZE. Approximately 4 15/16 x 7 15/16 inches.

CONDITION. Photo: Some tiny spots and specks. Otherwise, good. Mount: Missing the top layer and a crease at upper right corner. Crease and wear at lower left corner. Wear at other 2 corners. Front has light soiling. Back has some soiling and 2 long diagonal brown stains.

APPEARANCE. Very good tones. Very good details. Nice composition.
