WHITE BOXER VS. BLACK BOXER
CASED TINTYPE
$8000. USD
The boxer at right, face very visible for possible identification, lands a final blow to his counterpart. Of course, we see a posing stand behind the boxer at left and know that it's staged. Nevertheless, the symbolism seems provocative for the times.
The boxer at right is muscular and trim. The boxer at left looks athletic, but not nearly as buff.
HOUSING. This came to us uncased. We've married it to a union case (so called because these cases are a union of gutta percha, which is a natural resin, and plastic). Another correct term for these cases is thermoplastic. This one is functional with a working clasp. However, there are nicks and missing pieces by the clasp, and it is chipped at the corners.
SIZE. The tintype alone is approximately 3 1/8 x 2 7/16 inches. The case and parts are sixth plate size, which means they are meant to accommodate images that are 3 1/4 x 2 3/4 inches. Again, the tintype alone is approximately 3 1/8 x 2 7/16 inches.
CONDITION. Some bends and dents, mostly on the periphery. Surface wear.
APPEARANCE. Dramatic and provocative considering historical race relations in the United States.
