GALLERY

This bound volume of Harvard College (now University) is from 1871. What makes this album so unique is the emphasis on outdoor scenes. There are 21 of them, which is highly unusual. 3 of the outdoor scenes show lively and prosperous commercial activity. This album is a delight for those of us who like scenic and architectural studies.

There are 60 photographs, all one to a page. 37 are portraits of faculty. As mentioned above, 21 are outdoor scenes. 2 are of church interiors. This album is a head-scratcher in that there are no students depicted.

On the outside of the spine: "HARVARD COLLEGE PHOTOGRAPHS" and "CLASS OF 1871."

A few names are provided in the list below. However, for the majority of the faculty, we have provided descriptions of the portraits. Please note that we've conservatively said "Very good condition" on many that could be called "Excellent condition."

THE ALBUM. Approximately 13 1/2 x 10 1/2 x inches. The inside pages have varying degrees of soiling and foxing. The front and back covers have wear and soiling. The outside of the spine has wear, but the inside is strong and holds the volume together well.
