This is a silver gelatin photograph. An older African American man, with spectacles and a worn overcoat, looks at a book with 2 pictures of former President Abraham Lincoln, 33 years after he was assassinated. One wonders about the subject's life and the stories he could tell.

At lower left: "Copyright 1898 by J.H. TARBELL." This is Jesse Tarbell, who was a photographer associated with the southern states.

The photo is affixed to a modern mount, with photo corners, and has a modern mat over it.

SIZE. Photo: Approximately 8 x 6 inches. Mount and mat: Approximately 20 x 16 inches. Opening in mat: Approximately 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches.

CONDITION. Photo: Spots, specks, and small marks. Unevenly trimmed along left edge. Some wrinkles over surface. Mount and mat: Wear at corners. Light soiling.

APPEARANCE. Rich sepia tones. Very good composition. A poignant portrait.
