This has an air of sophistication about it, while being an example of a mid-1840s daguerreotype, which is considered early.

The woman looks at us cooly. She has mid-length curls and heavy eyebrows. She rests her elbow on the table and holds a book with her other hand. Her fingers appear abnormally long. While there could be a medical reason for this, we tend to think it's the result of a primitive lens.

SIZE. Sixth plate.

HOUSING. Split case. This is case #4-81, 'Brady Decadron,' in Nineteenth Century Photographic Cases and Wall Frames, by Paul Berg. The title references Mathew Brady, which means the case was produced by Mathew Brady. It is also possible that this daguerreotype was made by Brady's Gallery.

CONDITION. Modern seals (not by us). Very light scratches. Very good condition.

APPEARANCE. Bright image. Excellent contrast. Strong presence.
