CARS AND GOLDFISH #2
MODERN DAGUERREOTYPE BY LI JUNYI FROM CHINA
$1200. USD
Li Junyi's story is that of an outsider in art. Mr. Junyi, from China, was a professional photographer when, in 2011, he decided to make daguerreotypes. He had no training whatsoever, obtaining his instructions from the internet. He had no teacher and no mentor. He was completely self-taught. Mr. Junyi made daguerreotypes over the course of a couple of years, and then stopped. However, he is still active as a photographer.
Each daguerreotype is inscribed on reverse with Li Junyi's name, in English and in Chinese, and each is dated. Experts praise the silver tones as well as the invention in his daguerreotypes. Ten examples of his work are in the collection of the esteemed Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. Other examples are in private collections. Needless to say, Li Junyi's daguerreotypes are precious and few.
This surreal daguerreotype was made in 2011. It features cars and goldfish in a cityscape. One wonders if Li Junyi was prescient on climate change. It's an odd juxtaposition, and it works.
