There is so much going on in this daguerreotype. The content and composition are beautifully intermingled.

THE GIRL. The girl's hair is parted in the middle. She wears a choker, brightly patterned off-shoulder dress, and bloomers. Her shoes come together nicely, and her striped socks or tights get our attention. She cradles a doll.

THE DOLL. We can see the doll's face. In fact, it looks like the doll's eyes are trained on us! Even with the girl's hand covering much of the doll, we see rich patterns on the fabric. The doll wears a bonnet and long dress.

THE DOG. The dog snuggles and seems very comfortably asleep, unaware of the daguerreotypist. We can see the dog's face clearly.

THE FLOWERS. The flowers are the proverbial cherry on the top. What a magnificent exclamation point!

THE FUR. All the above rests on a blanket of patterned fur.

SIZE. Quarter plate.

HOUSING. Full, worn, velvet case.

CONDITION. Oxidation and thin silver (3:00, 9:00 & 12:00) and tarnish (6:00) at the edges. Light spot (10:00). Heavy horizontal buff marks. Vertical scratches. Old deteriorating glass replaced with hand-cut, high-quality, borosilicate glass by Derek French. Resealed.

APPEARANCE. Wonderful patterns and textures. Strong content. Masterful composition. An exceptional portrait.
