He stands proudly with his sword. He has gold shoulder boards and his hat bas been embellished with gold gilding. Perhaps some of you can read his belt buckle. His shoulder strap and tassels have been tinted burgundy. The camp scene has all been hand-colored, mostly green. There are hints of burgundy in the sky. The "US" at left lets us know that this is laterally reversed.

SIZE. Quarter plate.

HOUSING. This is case #1-35, 'Alone at the Rendezvous, in Nineteenth Century Photographic Cases and Wall Frames, by Paul Berg. The book lists it as Common. This is case #31, 'Alone at the Rendevous,' in Union Cases, by Krainik, Krainik, and Walvoord. The book lists it as Available.

From Union Cases: "This romantic vignette is based on a mezzotint by the eminent Philadelphia engraver John Sartain (1808-1897) from a painting by Alfred deDreux. The scene shows a young woman on horseback awaiting the arrival of her lover. His figure can be seen in the distance, coming down the forest lane."

The case is in very good to excellent condition. It has square corners and sharp edges. No nicks. No stress cracks. The clasp works.

CONDITION. A few tiny white spots. A light haze at left side mirrors the mat and goes up over his head and down. Not sure if this is a painted effect or oxidation. When I only noticed it at left, I thought it was the latter, but now that I see it circle back down, I wonder if it's an artists's effect. Very good to excellent condition regardless.

APPEARANCE. Colors are subtle but wonderful. The bright gold gilding is a plus. Great pose and composition.
